Our hero, Alasdair, is a man used to being in control. When the life of a loved one is in danger, however, he must rely on Letitia's skills to save them. St. Martin -- Best read snuggled up by the fire on Halloween night : My first exposure to Behind the Veil came in the form of a request on Twitter from an author I didn’t know—E.J. Dawson. She wanted someone to read a short story and tell her what they thought. I volunteered and knew I was reading something amazing. And what a ride after reading this book! Behind the Veil by E.J. Dawson is a haunting novel about that makes your mind think a lot. The tone of the book is just *chef's kiss* and Letitia is an amazing character. Dawson is a master of dripping details throughout the book so that by the end of the book you have all the information and it makes the climax so much more terrifying. It is the time after the war, and the heroine uses her power to bring closure to people's families and help them get an understanding of their close ones' last thoughts before taking the final breath. Unwittingly she gets entangled in a murder mystery that makes her confront dark forces. The darkness is vile and ready to torment her to death. I am so happy that I stumbled upon this because it normally wouldn't have been on my radar. The main thing that grabbed me with this story is the main character. The author has really brought her and her power to life which made the read phenomenal. I felt like I truly understood her which made the book very powerful. A woman with out-of-this-world skills, a taciturn character, and a troublesome past is faced with a new challenge that will bring terror into her life. The book presents a different side of death, sorrow, and grief, subjects that always leave us wondering what’s “behind the veil” This is not a fast-paced thriller, but a slow-cooking narrative that will make you shudder. There are plenty of events to get through in this one, and not all of them are pleasant either. I found Letitia to be an interesting character, and you can decide for yourself what you think about her skills.
